American Chemistry Council President and CEO Chris Jahn today sent a letter to President Trump and all 50 governors reminding them of the U.S. business of chemistry’s crucial role in our nation’s manufacturing supply chain and the need to maintain operations during this unprecedented time. Recognized as a Critical Infrastructure Sector by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. chemicals industry is ready to deploy the full power of chemistry to help combat the spread of the novel coronavirus while maintaining essential operations to continue to serve critical sectors of the U.S. economy.
While extraordinary measures like social distancing, telework polices and directives to limit non-essential business activity are currently in the best interest of public health, key industries and sectors such as chemical manufacturing must be able to maintain operations, access critical supplies and transportation systems so that we can supply other sectors and enable the delivery of essential products and services.
The letter goes on to highlight many of the ways in which our industry is particularly vital right now as chemicals enable countless products that are critical in this challenging time. From biocides and disinfectants, to lifesaving medical supplies, personal protective equipment and compounds for a safe and abundant food supply, to chlorine essential to protecting our nation’s drinking water.
