More than a billion people around the world are taking part in Earth Day celebrations this year, as the nearly 800,000 men and women employed by the U.S. chemistry industry continue to find ways to create a more sustainable future for our planet.
For example, products of chemistry empower Americans and American businesses to improve energy efficiency while making our nation’s energy supplies go further than ever. In fact, nearly every energy-saving technology depends on innovations in chemistry.
Here are just a few:
- The Dow Chemical Company’s cutting-edge solar shingles generate clean, renewable energy from the sun – cutting energy costs and helping homeowners reduce their carbon footprint;
- Honeywell created a novel process for manufacturing high-purity LIPF6, a critical component of batteries used in hybrid and electric vehicles;
- Celanese’s advanced TCX® ethanol process technology uses basic hydrocarbons – not food crops – as feedstock for meeting the world’s increasing need for consistent, high-quality fuel ethanol;
- LANXESS developed a high-tech plastic that makes cars lighter, reducing fuel consumption and lowering carbon dioxide emissions;
- BASF collaborated with Daimler to create energy-saving innovations for the Smart Forvision concept vehicle – creating a vehicle with electrical energy efficiency, multifunctional lightweight construction, and integrated temperature management.
What’s more, for every unit of CO2 emitted while manufacturing chemistry products like these, two units of CO2 are saved, largely through energy savings enabled by them.
As we continue to celebrate Earth Day, it’s also important to keep in mind that sustainable technologies and energy efficiency solutions are made possible by common sense government policies and regulations.
