We’re very excited to announce the launch of a user-generated video campaign! It’s easy to sign up and free to enter. All you need is a camcorder or some motion graphics skills, a bit of creative inspiration and an interest in learning how chemistry is creating energy solutions for a strong, secure and sustainable future.
Rather than produce the video ourselves, we thought it’d be fun to be upstaged by the broader creative community – you. That’s why the contest, “From Chemistry to Energy,” is run by Zooppa.com, a global social advertising platform for digital professionals, filmmakers and enthusiasts alike.
The submission deadline is January 23, 2012. Winners will be announced on or before February 3, 2012.
As we’ve written before, chemistry has made it possible for America to tap into our natural gas reserves as well as use and reuse energy in more efficient and sustainable ways. But, the truth is, when people think about energy, they don’t automatically connect it with chemistry, despite the fact that one isn’t possible without the other.
While the videos should help people make that connection, the creative approach you take and the content you select will also tell us a great deal about what you find most interesting about this subject. It’s an exciting opportunity for us to see, hear and learn from your perspective on each of the important links between chemistry and energy.

Creating Energy Solutions for a Strong, Secure and Sustainable Future
When people think about ENERGY, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn’t… CHEMISTRY! Yet, the two are inextricably linked. Chemistry makes it possible for America to produce energy, use it more efficiently, and reuse it wisely.
It’s perfectly fine if you didn’t know that – most people don’t. But now that you do, we could really use your creativity and expertise in helping others make the connection, too.
The best part? You’ll get to surprise and impress your friends, family and colleagues with your superior chemistry/energy knowledge – and, armed with a camera or a computer, you’ll be among the first people ever to have told this story visually.
Don’t know much about chemistry? Don’t sweat it! This BACKGROUND STORY will help you get the grip on chemistry you’ll need to create a film.
Create a video, 1 to 4 minutes long, that weaves each of the below three issues into one compelling narrative, illustrating chemistry’s impact on each issue (see BACKGROUND STORY for background on each issue):
You are free to choose how you wish to tell the story, as long as you incorporate all three elements into your narrative. For example, you might begin with the shale gas revolution and how chemistry is leveraging new natural gas supplies to support new economic growth and jobs; then illustrate Americans using interesting chemistry-driven products to save energy; and complete the energy life-cycle with the innovation behind energy recovery.
We strongly encourage you to incorporate many different chemistry products and uses into your video, rather than focusing on any single product or use alone. IMPORTANT: Be sure to illustrate how chemistry enables us to use those products, and our time, more efficiently.
We’re looking for videos that are interesting, engaging, and surprising. Tell a story that people would want to share! But please stay away from ironic, silly, or goofy storytelling techniques. We’re a professional industry and we are looking for a professional video. Feel free to show off your motion graphics skills! And if you shoot with a camcorder, we’d prefer that you record in Hi-Def (if possible) and use a tripod whenever you can.
