Bringing Recycling Back Home

posted by Amanda Wills Tuesday, June 2, 2009 2:05pm

The conversations that the contributors started on this blog were all very insightful. While some drifted off topic, there was still an obvious display of knowledge on recycling and the industry. There were a lot of new things I learned about and joined in conversations in which I had a voice. Thank you to everyone who contributed and the American Chemistry Council for hosting the summit.

Moving forward a bit to the prompted question on recycling as a society, I think, so far, we’re on the right track. As I have said in an earlier post, there are other countries (such as Germany) that are far more advanced than the U.S. But it’s not about comparison – it’s about how hard we’re trying to build a better future in recycling.

As recycling becomes more and more integrated into my life, I continue to reach out to my friends and family to encourage them to recycle. In the case of my parents, it was simply the barrier of knowledge that deterred them from recycling. After telling my mother how easy recycling is, what materials can be put into the bin and what products can come out of recycling, she was more than ready to begin her own green journey.

I think some Americans are beginning to become jaded with the idea of recycling, and now it doesn’t seem so close to home. Let’s bring recycling back to a personal level and lead by example for those around us. Eventually, the movement will catch on like wildfire, and recycling will be irresistible.
